Gran Canaria. A continent in miniature
Natural and centuries of history

Known as the “continent in miniature” because of the variety of its geography, flora and climate. Together with Tenerife, it is the capital of the Canary Islands, with a population of 800,000 habitants and, like Tenerife, it is the island with the greatest diversity of economic activity. In the capital city, you will find everything you can imagine; a pulsating urban life style, shopping centres, theatres, auditoriums and multi-purpose open spaces.

The western half of the island is a Biosphere Reserve and if offers activities for those who prefer a quieter life in any of its 33 protected areas. You can choose between its heavenly black sand beaches, rural tourism, bridle paths or a ramble through the Canary Island pine forests.

What you can not miss? Gran Canaria
What you can not miss?

You will need several days to truly discover Gran Canaria... or even better, go back several times. Just to cover the capital city, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, you'll need several days. We also recommend you to check out its villages, like Moya, Ingenio, Agüimes, Firgas, Mogán, and of course, Artenara, one of the most beautiful in Spain. Also, you can't miss its famous miles-long beaches, like Las Canteras or Playa del Inglés, with the Maspalomas dunes as a climax.

Gastronomy Gran Canaria
Gastronomy

Gran Canaria gastronomy is characterised by simple dishes, which does not lessen the mastery with which they are made. Some examples are the vegetable stews, the papas arrugadas, the sancocho, the gofio escaldado, the desserts with fruits from the island, as well as wines and distilled beverages which make up a particular culinary heritage that makes it different from other places. You can't leave without tasting the Chorizo de Teror, Queso de Flor, or the Bizcochos de Moya.

What to pack? Gran Canaria
What to pack?

Gran Canaria enjoys pleasant temperatures year-round. However, you have to be prepared for everything. Take note, depending on your travel date:

During the winter, we recommend wearing warm clothing, especially if you visit the high areas of the island.

The rest of the year, it is advisable to bring appropriate footwear if you want to walk along the hundreds of trekking trails that run across the island. And of course, don't forget your towel and bathing costume!

With the service offered by the team of fast ferries Bentago Express and Bencomo Express, the journey between Agaete and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, or vice versa, takes only 80 minutes.

This sea link is simple, comfortable, economical and offers you the possibility to take your own car with you so as to make the most of your valuable time.

The trip from Tenerife to Gran Canaria takes you into the picturesque village port of Agaete. This traditional fishing village is just a 20-minutes car journey away from the capital city, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Passengers can also make use of a free bus service between the port and the capital.

Passengers travelling the other way, from Agaete in Gran Canaria to Tenerife, arrive in the port of the capital city Santa Cruz de Tenerife, just a stone's throw away from the bustling, cosmopolitan centre. With its fast ferries, Fred. Olsen Express offers the most extensive timetable ever to join up the two capitals and the increase in capacity for both foot passengers and freight vehicles have brought even more advantages to its users.

Visit Gran Canaria, declared a World Biosphere Reserve, or discover the island of Tenerife, with cities such as La Laguna, on the UNESCO's World Heritage List and model city for developments in the New World. Or take a trip to its impressive National Park, Las Cañadas del Teide, home of the dormant volcano, El Teide, the highest mountain in Spain, at 3.718 meters above sea level, unique symbol of the island.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

The capital city of the eastern province of the Canary Islands has a lot to offer, enjoy a tranquil swim in the Playa de Las Canteras, stroll through the cobblestones streets of Vegueta while you visit nice restaurants; spend an afternoon shopping in the main street of Triana or explore the seaside avenue riding a bike while a sailboat race unfurls. As you see ¡there are many things to do!

The Beach and Dunes of Maspalomas

You'll find this long beach with elevated sand dunes that reach the horizon in the south side of the island. A unique experience that any traveller will enjoy, and a postcard that you can't leave out of your album. Also, you can discover other beaches here.

Puerto de Mogán

The "Little Venice" of the Canaries is the furthest point from the capital, but the trip is worthwhile. Its pedestrian streets are scattered by bridges that cross seawater canals. In addition, it features a wonderful beach with a spring-like climate year-round.

Teror

One of the oldest populated areas of the Canaries; it was founded back in 1481, and is a place of pilgrimage for Canarians that visit the Basílica of the Virgen del Pino, built in 1767. The plaza of Teror is a good place to enjoy the calle Real, with its colourful balconies.

Tejeda and Artenara

If you have time, a visit to the centre of the island will leave a good taste in your mouth... literally. In addition to the impressive views, with Roque Nublo at the highest point and the sea all around, it is a pleasure to visit these two towns and enjoy their gastronomy.

Barranco de Guayadeque

Be amazed by the “cave-like houses”, the homes where the aboriginal Canarians of the past used to live, remodelled for modern life. Some have been converted into restaurants, and one is even a church, which you can visit.
