Fuerteventura. The quiet island
A paradise of crystal clear waters.

An island surrounded by the crystal clear waters of the Ocean and endless white-sand beaches, an invitation to relax and a paradise for those who love wind sports.
But it isn’t all sun, sea and sand, the island has been declared a Biosphere Reserve and it will amaze you with its surprising landscapes, vast plains, the result of wind erosion, volcanic landscapes with mantles of lava and sand dunes make up this magnificent land.
On the island, you will discover the history of the Canary Islands in its old hamlets and with luck, you may see the Egyptian vulture, the only vulture that lives in the islands.

What you can not miss?

Without a doubt, the best beaches in the Canary Islands are here: Barlovento, Costa Calma, Cofete... an endless number of fine sand beaches await you on this long island which hides a lot more, like the Dunes of Corralejo National Park, the Casa de los Coroneles, or the Montaña de Tindaya. To enjoy it to the fullest? Bring your surfboard!

Gastronomy Fuerteventura
Gastronomy

The most well-rooted recipes never lack fish and shellfish, although the papas arrugadas or the famous queso majorero, a cheese that is usually served as a side dish to a variety of plates, are never ignored. The use of goat meat in various traditional dishes also stands out.

The most recommended pubs are found in Corralejo and the area around Playa de Caleta de Fuste, since their nightlife venues do not have a set closing time.

What to pack? Fuerteventura
What to pack?

The arid and desert-like landscape of this island is coupled with a warm climate almost all year long. This is why warm clothes become a burden and just light clothing and sandals will be enough. In addition, its beaches and its characteristic wind are perfect for practising sports like windsurfing, surfing, and even scuba diving. You will only need a swimsuit for this, as there are several specialised shops throughout the island in which you can get all the necessary gear.

It all started...

Following the replacement of the Ferry Benchijigua, Ferry Gomera contemplated the possibility of increasing its offer in the Canaries with the introduction of a new ferry link between the ports of Playa Blanca (Lanzarote) and Corralejo (Fuerteventura). The Ferry Benchijigua was given a new base in the island of Fuerteventura and was renamed Betancuria.

This service was offered for six months between August 1981 and February 1982, but was later suspended due to serious technical problems affecting the ships manoeuvrability. However, these setbacks did not mean a permanent cancellation of the route and in September 1988, after an extensive market research programme, Ferry Gomera put a new vessel into service. The Sunflower, an international ship bearing the Panamanian flag and previously in service in the Baltic Sea, was promptly given a new name: Betancuria.

It was worth the wait

On 24 July 1989, after eight long months awaiting permits from the local authorities, the new service once again came into action. In 1990, just one year after this event, the Ferry Betancuria had become a clear market leader and received the regular support of both regular passengers and local travel agents. The high level of service traditionally offered by the company was combined with a wide publicity campaign and, along with the affordable prices offered by the company, turned out to be decisive factors in reaching the goals set for the first year.

Originally this route, based in the small harbour of Corralejo in the north of Fuerteventura, offered four daily return journeys each one lasting 30 minutes.

Always ¡changing to improve!

In 1992 the increase in sea-faring traffic between these islands prompted the acquisition of another vessel, the Buganvilla, with a capacity to carry 1.000 foot passengers and 104 cars, with which the Betancuria was sent to dry docks.

At the end of 2003, the modern Fast Ferry, Bocayna Express, replaced the Buganvilla. This impressive catamaran was purpose-built in Australia taking into account the specific needs of maritime crossings between the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The journey takes just 25 minutes but in no way sacrifices those factors demanded by our customers: comfort, large capacity and, above all, high quality service.

In 2022, and given the increase in both local and visiting travelers between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, Fred. Olsen opted for the purchase of a new catamaran to offer a better service and more frequencies between these two islands. This is how the Buganvilla Express (currently renamed Buganvilla) arrived in the Canary Islands, a small miniferry with a design oriented towards comfort and perfect for enjoying the extraordinary views of the Bocaina canal.

Cofete and Barlovento beaches

With over a 10 kilometers extension, these idyllic beaches are located in a protected natural environment, so you won't see any buildings. Additionally, the fact that it takes over an hour to get there from Morrojable translates into few visitors and plenty of space for you, of which many take advantage to practice nudism in privacy. It is also famous for its perfect conditions to practice sports such as surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing.

Isla de Lobos

It is one Fuerteventura’s most recommended natural settings. To get to isla de Lobos, you must take a ferry from the port of Corralejo. The trip takes only a few minutes. Upon arrival, you can hike through its natural trails, sunbathe on one of its beaches, as well as relish on the different types of birds and small animals, unique to the local fauna.

La Casa de los Coroneles

This historical monument, dated mid-19th Century, is located up north in the island, specifically in the town of La Oliva. This old building stands out due to its peculiar mix of architectural styles and for being located practically in the middle of a large moor. You'll need to take a taxi or rent your own vehicle to visit it.

Dunas de Corralejo Natural Park

This tourist site, declared Natural Reserve, is one of Fuerteventura’s most representative centres. It stands out due to its high scenic value, and serves as a refuge for hundreds of birds endemic to the Canaries. Visiting this natural park is a feast for the senses since you have at your disposal the cleanest and bluest portion of sea on the island facing the fine, white sand beaches. Additionally, from any point of this centre, you can see Isla de los Lobos, and slightly further away, the island of Lanzarote.

Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Peña

The Nuestra Señora de la Peña shrine is one of the most important religious buildings on the island, as the figure of its patron saint is preserved inside. It's worth pointing out that it is also one of the oldest, dating back to the beginning of the 18th Century. To visit it, you'll need to rent a car and drive to a village located in Betancuria known as Barranco de Rio Palmas.

Oasis Park La Lajita

If you travel with children, this amusement park will provide them with hours of fun, and adults will enjoy it as well. The park is located in the town of La Lajita, near Jandía Natural Park. It's worth noting that Oasis Park is easily accessed by road. This park has more than 3000 animals of 250 different species. Are you going to miss it?
