Lanzarote. The enjoyment of nature
The best beaches of the Atlantic

The easternmost of the islands, just 100 kilometers away from Africa. It has a population of approximately 120.000 people, working mainly in the tourist industry.
Like other Canary Islands, it was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1993, and it also has a Marine Reserve, a National Park and 12 protected areas. Your enjoyment of the natural environment is guaranteed.
In the hinterland, you will find the Timanfaya National Park and other impressive volcanic landscapes that served as inspiration for the unforgettable art of Cesar Manrique.
You can still feel the heat from the depths of the earth, and at the same time, enjoy the contrast with the endless white sand beaches.

Just off the coast of Lanzarote is the Chinijo Archipelago, consisting of four uninhabited islets and the small island of La Graciosa.

Remember that a mere 25 minutes away, you have the wonderful island of Fuerteventura. The Fred. Olsen Express Ferrys departs each day on a short cruise that will take you to the neighbouring islands, just waiting to be discovered.

What you can not miss? Lanzarote
What you can not miss?

The land of César Manrique. The work of this artist, creator of the Jameos del Agua, the Mirador del Rio, and the Jardin de Cactus, among other marvels, develops among volcanic landscapes. You will also enjoy the beautiful beaches of Lanzarote, such as Papagayo or Famara, and will stroll through the Timafaya volcanoes, as well as visit historic monuments such as the Church of San Ginés or the Castles of San José, San Gabriel, and Santa Bárbara.

Gastronomy Lanzarote
Gastronomy

In Lanzarote, the typical food is based on sea food, especially fish and shellfish. Without a doubt, the traveller can't miss the famous sancocho, boiled salted fish (or sancochado) served with potatoes, sweet potatoes, gofio, and mojo. The locals recommend accompanying this kind of dish with a glass of wine, and there are none better than local Lanzarote wines. The wine production here is based on a unique process -characterised by the use of a layer of black sand- which produces rich grapes such as the Malvasia, adapted to the environment, small, and of high quality due to their balance, flavour, and aroma, which are later transferred to the wine.

What to pack? Lanzarote
What to pack?

In an island where it's rare for the temperature to drop below 20 degrees, you don't need to worry about bringing warm clothing, just something light to wear on winter nights. During the day, casual clothing, some sandals, and you are ready to enjoy! If you're going to practice any water sports, you can bring your own equipment, though you won't have a problem renting it in at the specialised shops on the island. There are plenty!

It all started...

Following the replacement of the Ferry Benchijigua, Ferry Gomera contemplated the possibility of increasing its offer in the Canaries with the introduction of a new ferry link between the ports of Playa Blanca (Lanzarote) and Corralejo (Fuerteventura). The Ferry Benchijigua was given a new base in the island of Fuerteventura and was renamed Betancuria.

This service was offered for six months between August 1981 and February 1982, but was later suspended due to serious technical problems affecting the ships manoeuvrability. However, these setbacks did not mean a permanent cancellation of the route and in September 1988, after an extensive market research programme, Ferry Gomera put a new vessel into service. The Sunflower, an international ship bearing the Panamanian flag and previously in service in the Baltic Sea, was promptly given a new name: Betancuria.

It was worth the wait

On 24 July 1989, after eight long months awaiting permits from the local authorities, the new service once again came into action. In 1990, just one year after this event, the Ferry Betancuria had become a clear market leader and received the regular support of both regular passengers and local travel agents. The high level of service traditionally offered by the company was combined with a wide publicity campaign and, along with the affordable prices offered by the company, turned out to be decisive factors in reaching the goals set for the first year.

Originally this route, based in the small harbour of Corralejo in the north of Fuerteventura, offered four daily return journeys each one lasting 30 minutes.

Always ¡changing to improve!

In 1992 the increase in sea-faring traffic between these islands prompted the acquisition of another vessel, the Buganvilla, with a capacity to carry 1.000 foot passengers and 104 cars, with which the Betancuria was sent to dry docks.

At the end of 2003, the modern Fast Ferry, Bocayna Express, replaced the Buganvilla. This impressive catamaran was purpose-built in Australia taking into account the specific needs of maritime crossings between the islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The journey takes just 25 minutes but in no way sacrifices those factors demanded by our customers: comfort, large capacity and, above all, high quality service.

In 2022, and given the increase in both local and visiting travelers between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, Fred. Olsen opted for the purchase of a new catamaran to offer a better service and more frequencies between these two islands. This is how the Buganvilla Express (currently renamed Buganvilla) arrived in the Canary Islands, a small miniferry with a design oriented towards comfort and perfect for enjoying the extraordinary views of the Bocaina canal.

Jameos del Agua

This is a special artistic undertaking created from a series of natural lava tubes by the Lanzarote artist César Manrique, and intends to show the visitor a space for contemplating almost virgin natural areas. You have to see it, you will be amazed by its beauty.

Cueva de Los Verdes

An extensive tunnel more than six kilometers in length, the result of the La Corona volcano eruption (approximately 3.000 - 5.000 years ago). The cave has a secret that you will only know if you visit it.

Playa de Papagayo

Its beauty will leave you fascinated, and you won't be able to resist swimming in the tranquil, crystalline waters of this beach, where the waves break in the distance.

Timanfaya National Park

It is known that the last important volcanic eruption in this area was in the mid-18th Century and swept away several villages. The accounts gathered from that time claim that the boiling rock took about 6 years to dry out, giving way later to the quite deserted landscape with little vegetation of its nowadays surroundings. Without a doubt, the result of this natural transformation is a unique volcanic landscape, which is what makes up Timanfaya National Park.

Jardin de Cactus

An essential visit, especially if you like botany. It is another one of the places of harmony between nature and the architecture driven by the artist and thinker César Manrique. It consists of five thousand square meters in which you can find more than 4,500 specimens of 450 copies of cactus, originating from places as different as Peru, Mexico, Chile, the United States, Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar, Morocco, and the Canary Islands, which continue to be augmented by periodic plantings of new species.

Mirador del Rio

The Mirador del Rio represents one of the most characteristic architectural creations of César Manrique. It is found at the top of Risco de Famara, 474 meters above sea level, in the northernmost area of the island. From here, we can admire one of the most spectacular panoramic views of Lanzarote: the Chinijo Archipelago Natural Park, and the Risco de Famara. Certainly one of the best postcards of the island you can take with you.
